Doctoral programs
The doctorate at the ETH is not regulated by an overarching doctoral program, as is perhaps the case at other universities. Every doctoral student can select and put together the elements of his or her doctoral studies themselves. Nevertheless, the departments have the opportunity to organize and offer their courses for doctoral studies in the form of doctoral programs.
The Life Science Zurich Graduate School, for example, offers such programs. It consists of 16 highly qualified doctoral programs offered jointly by the ETH and the University of Zurich. Its purpose is to attract the most promising young scientists from around the world by offering a comprehensive and challenging education for doctoral students in the life sciences.
How do I find a doctoral position?
Unlike at many other universities, the doctorate at ETH Zurich is not organized through a superordinate doctoral school. ETH mainly offers individual doctorates, or each potential supervisor of a doctoral thesis recruits their doctoral students themselves. In order to be able to complete a doctorate at ETH, a professor from ETH must be willing to take over the supervision of your dissertation .
With a few exceptions, doctorates are associated with employment at ETH or in the ETH area. The best way to apply for a doctoral position is directly to the professorship you are interested in. To do this, visit the website of the department where you would like to do your doctorate and contact the professors who are suitable for you directly.
